Message Often wondered and been reading, yet I have not seen this actual Law yet on here. Officially, no production car in Japan is supposed to be listed with more than 280 horsepower at the flywheel.

The JDM MKIV Supra TT was spec'ed at 280 hp. And it seems that it was actually limited to that. The U.S. Supra went 13.3 in the 1/4 mile, while the Japanese Supra came in at 14 flat, 7/10s of a second slower! An American-market car that's faster than its Japanese domestic cousin? Sounds crazy. The JDM Supra came with smaller injectors (430cc vs. 540) and a different final drive. So they didn't just "chip it" like many other manufacturers did.

The NSX at least used to conform to the 280 limit. I remember one dynoing at 270. Of course, who knows how much it puts out above redline. Redline is 8k, but the rev limiter doesn't kick in until 8300. Remember, the numbers they give you in the U.S. don't necessarily reflect what they tell the people of Japan.

The 300zx TT was 280Bhp
Skylines 280Bhp and so on
3000gt
RX/7

Now I read things like this:

" The gentleman's agreement for all the Japanese companies making supercars. 280hp is the limit, and its that way because they don't want to get caught up in a "horsepower war" where all the companies just one up each other with power numbers and neglect the rest of the car which they accuse American car makers of doing. I think what they're doing is equally stupid. "

and you can read it everywhere, like here for the NSX

I been told it was for the companies paying more attention to safety and handling of the cars and not a power war. I heard it was to govern the cars down because the Island of Japan and the size of the freeways would not be safe to have cars produced to run over 180kph or have over 300Bhp and no govner. Yet I'm still looking for this law and just like all American made Sports cars. They say one thing yet Dyno higher, so why state a number in the first place?

On EVO forum you see it too.

This to me is the number one conclusion on why some stock parts on the Z32 make sense now. For those that have pull the stock Air box off, you can see where the turbo's can suffocate. The whole exhaust system is crap. The bends are crap along with the angels. Boost is set to damn low for a 3500lbs RWD car. The whole law makes no sense when your in competition with other car manufactures of the world. Hell smog emissions laws kill power rating alone, much less, lets get together and kill the power all together.

Yet I still can't find this law.

Going to XV+ and beyond :)
